I've thought about this quite a bit: I was very lucky to grow up Jewish in NYC at a time where it was so easy that our culture diffused into mainstream NYC (1971-1988, sort of the middle to last third, I'd argue), so I have no interest in "aliyah" and am sort of insulted at the term: Ascend to what? You mean I'm lacking something if I don't emigrate? The recruiting efforts in France after Anti-Semitic attacks there are also offensive to me, given France's steadfast support and protection (at least in modern times; I know Phoebe could say a lot about the 1890s or so)

At the same time, I also bristle at Freddie DeBoer's "This is Zion" formulation. Who is he to tell Jews whether they can form their own nation, just as other religions have done? Notionally, Israel was to be different from other ethnic states in that it espoused egalitarianism, but that has curdled under Netanyahu's coalition, so I cannot hide behind the idea that Israel is "Jewish America" any longer.

So do I *need* Israel, as Phoebe asks of the privileged Gen-Z refusenik? Materially, no. Yet it still holds importance to me, and instills pride in being Jewish. I tend to liken it to a peacock's feather, but that's strictly what it does *for me*. For the 7-8M Jews living in Israel, their existence is very, very real, and I want them to live happy, healthy lives. I guess I would describe Israeli Jews as my cousins.

Lol whatever, Daniel! This article is so funny and does a great job of pointing out how absurd these people are.
